Giving Birth to Mikaela: Part I (Water Broke)

So here’s the long awaited “birthing experience” of Mikaela. Many things were going through our minds, my mind in particular (can’t read Kat’s… not all the time at least) during the birth. I took dot-point notes with my phone in hopes that I will remember them all when I got the time to write it proper. So here goes…

Gary described our experience from his perspective as “Relaxed”. From the start when Kat’s water broke until the point when we went to the hospital was nothing like the movies!

Completely relaxed
Completely relaxed

We went to catch a movie (12th Sept, 2008). It was the Star Wars animated version “Clone Wars”. Thank God we decided to catch the earlier show. Had Mackers (McDonalds) for dinner before heading home at 9.30pm. (According to Kat…) The waters broke at 10pm. She then calmly took a shower (still didn’t tell me), came out, started packing the living room (we were spring cleaning, the house was a mess, she tried to tidy up a bit… still not telling me! ), went back into the room for a while (I was watching TV, oblivious to what had happened), she then popped her head out and asked me to come in and “bring the cordless phone in with you”. In my mind I was already starting to panic. She don’t usually bathe so late, and pack the house after 10pm. We certainly don’t call anyone after 10pm, they’d think we’re mad! All she said was, “I think we need to call the hospital, my water broke.” It sounded like something I could say, “ok, can I continue with the TV now?”, No! Wait, what did you say again?! *run around the room screaming like a mad man*-NOT

We eventually did call the hospital and was told to come in at 11.30pm, in which we decided “nuh, we’ll come in at 12am” just to make the extra day. This gave us 1.5 hours to make me a coffee and catch an episode of Burn Notice before leaving. Gary came upstairs and I asked if he could feed the dogs tomorrow, in which he casually replied “yes”. He went downstairs. Then came up again (must have thought something was wrong as we never ask him to do that unless we go for holiday). He asked “erm why leh?”. In which we replied (me sipping coffee and Kat watching TV), “oh Kat’s water broke”. He went, “ok”… Continued down the stairs and then.. “WHAT?!” *run around the room screaming like a mad man*-NOT

Phew! I feel tired already… (from writing)

And so we arrived at the hospital, filled our piles of paperwork, and erm… pretty much went to sleep in the “birthing suites”. They call them that, but looks like a normal hospital room with an excercise ball and a reclinder sofa…

I think will stop here. Part II – Contractions, will come in the next entry…
